It could be a faulty GPU- with normal kernel it artifacts the framebuffer (the character symbols are out of shape white dots) this happens with and without KMS, Xorg crashes and i can't even see the error and for some reason it fails to log it too. On the fallback kernel it works but only without KMS otherwise it has the same problem, on Xorg the intel and fbdev drivers give a blackscreen and a system lockup, vesafb locks after it picks a resolution not supported by the monitor and disobeys custom resolutions in the config file. So in short, Xorg doesn't work at all.
On Alpine (a non-free distribution) it doesn't have this problem and Xorg works but only with the framebuffer driver and the performance is terrible. The intel driver doesn't work.
