All ThinkPads have a Wifi card whitelist at the BIOS level that prevents using other Wifi cards. The restriction can be bypassed by installing Libreboot or Coreboot, or editing the official Lenovo/IBM BIOS. See ThinkWiki for more information.

This model can be externally flashed with Libreboot. Doing so also removes the Intel Management Engine. Instructions can be found here: https://www.libreboot.org/docs/install/x200_external.html
