Add the 3G cards category
submitted by Ark74, 14:59, 9 Outubro 2010
TÓPICO: new categories of hardware
STATUS: closed
PRIORIDADE: low
Descrição:
Since the network is coming with new technology we could add the 3G cards category to the h-node project. Here i add and suggested list for input:
  • Vendor
  • Model Name
  • VendorID:ProductID code device
  • + Internet Service Provider // (could be added more than 1 for each device)
    • - ISP1 (Country1)
      - ISP2 (Country1)
      - ISP1 (Country2)
      - ISP3 (Country3)
=== Optional: That would remove the "(Country)" from the ISP list.
  • Country // (could be added more than 1 for each device)
    • - Worldcontry list
    ===
  • Year of commercialization
  • Interface (set not-specified if not sure)
    • - USB
      - PCMCIA
      - Expresscard
      - etc
  • GNU/Linux distribution used for the test
  • Tested with the following kernel libre
  • Does it work with free software

It is a good idea. I have only a question about one input since I have no experience about 3G cards: is the ISP/Country information linked in some way to the hardware itself? Can't I use a 3G card with any ISP/Country?

    Ark74:
No, not at all. The ISP and country fields are just to help users to relation their device with the service. Now that i think about it, that info should appear on the the Description field better.

No, not all 3G cards work on any contry with any ISP. Every ISP gives the service for their configured device, some of them outside the country. AFAIK it's only for one ISP.

Ok, I don't know if a new entry is necessary to contain the ISP information or if that information can be inserted in the description field. Perhaps the second option (inside the description entry) is the best one.

If a new entry has to be created I would suggest a simple input entry (such as the kernel entry) where the user can insert one, or more separated by comma, ISP (and country, between brackets). Perhaps also a small textarea (similar to the one used by the description entry, but smaller) could be acceptable. It is simple to implement.

Also a select entry could be used (such as the vendor select entry) but in that case only one ISP can be chosen.

We could also implement a mechanism similar to the one used to choose the distribution

But.. in both the above mentioned cases we should know (and foresee) all the possible ISP/Country combinations

    Ark74:
Then maybe just a note asking the user to add ISP and Country on the description field if wanted may be enough. The easier the better.

Can someone please write here where a list of 3G cards vendors can be found?

    Ark74:
Here the ones i know and used on Mexico,
  • Franklin - http://www.fklt.com/
  • Huawei - http://www.huawei.com/
  • maybe we should announce this list gathering on some other mailing list to get more feedback

    tonicucoz:

What about the 3G card interfaces? I've used the same interfaces already used in the case of wifi cards:

    • USB
    • PCI
    • PCI-E
    • mini-PCI
    • mini-PCI-E
    • ExpressCard
    • PC-Card

    Are there other interfaces?

    tonicucoz:
Also a icon of a 3G card is necessary. I've used an USB icon that could (in some way) look like a 3G card icon (I now, it is really different :) ). It should be at least 50x50 pixel and free (obviously ;) ). If someone know where such an icon can be downloaded then he could add the link here..

I added the main interfaces on the first post for 3G Cards, on the road we could remove the ones that doesn't exist/are used. BTW this is great news, let's hear the feedback :)

You are right, sorry.. I have forgot the PCMCIA interface. It will be added as soon as possible

    I think you are right

I just discovered that PC-Card and PCMCIA is the same interface

Oh!, that's new for me too ;), the maybe we could set it as:

    PCMCIA/PC-Card

    For hardware newbies like us
