ADSL Cards
submitted by michael, 18:56, 30 Août 2011
SUJET: new categories of hardware
STATUS: closed
PRIORITE: low
Description:

I would need a suitable category to try to add the ADSL cards I have to h-node.

Once this category is added I may test if this functions properly with a FSF endorsed operating system by confirming if it connects to the ADSL service or not.

My current card is the Traverse Technologies Solos PCI ADSL2+

I have a 2 port variant, it appears in lspci -nnv as follows:

04:08.0 ATM network controller [0203]: Xilinx Corporation Device [10ee:0300]
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 20
	Memory at 90118000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128]
	Memory at 90110000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=32K]
	Kernel driver in use: solos
	Kernel modules: solos-pci

It replaced a Sangoma S518 card that had only proprietary drivers available from Traverse (openadsl) and Sangoma (wanpipe) to operate it.

That appeared in lspci -nnv as:

04:04.0 Network controller [0280]: Globespan Semiconductor Inc. Pulsar [PCI ADSL Card] [14bc:d002] (rev 01)
Subsystem: Globespan Semiconductor Inc. Device [14bc:0018]
Flags: stepping, slow devsel, IRQ 7
        Memory at fc000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

tonicucoz:

Is it a ethernet card with the modem integrated? That is, is it a router or a modem?

Perhaps we could simply add a subtype to ethernet cards to specify it is also a ADSL card..

michael:

I believe my card does not have an integrated Ethernet layer, the host will use it like an Asynchronous Transfer Mode card, permitting a full MTU consistent with native Ethernet and possibly more if the service allows it.

It could be described generically as a Duplex Telecommunication or Telecom Card as ADSL circuits can easily be several kilometres long.

Without a jumbo frame capability, such cards combining ADSL and Ethernet will limit the IP MTU due to the insertion of PPPoE headers, hence I chose to have a Solos card rather than the Viking card described at http://www.traverse.com.au/faqlist.php?faq_id=204

Since I'm not an expert in this subject, what's the difference between an ADSL card and a modem?

michael:
The ADSL PCI cards are modems, there are also USB ADSL modems as well, so a modem category on its own will be good for these cards.

tonicucoz:
ok, I think we could add the modem category

michael:
A modem category will be good, I will then have a category to place my device if it is compatible with a fully free operating system.

the modem category has been added
