What if computers can be upgraded to a higher compatibility class?

Hi, this is lammi87.

I was wondering if we could give more attention to computers on h-node which can be upgraded to a higher compatibility class by replacing one or more pieces of hardware. One example of such a machine is Vostro 3300 from Dell.

Currently it is hard for users to find such machines here because, at the moment, nothing indicates that they exist on hardware list or on search results:

Results of the search:

model name: Vostro 3300
model type: notebook
year of commercialization: 2010

model: Vostro 3300
vendor: Dell
subtype (notebook, netbook, tablet): notebook
year of commercialization: 2010
compatibility with free software: C-silver
view the other specifications

To improve this matter, we should have a new entry on the hardware insertation page for computers after the compatibility class entry, like this:

compatibility with free software:
| A Platinum | [Light bulb, a link to here, not here (please, update).]

upgradeability:
| not-specified | [Light bulb, a link to instructions (I can write them if needed).]
| to A Platinum |
| to B Gold |
| to C Silver |
| to D Bronze |

If a user selects anything besides "not-specified", the hardware list and search results would display a new "upgradeability" entry, like this:

Also, if a user goes to the hardware list and selects compatibility (let's say A Platinum) as a filter, the page would include lower compatibility machines with upgradeability to the defined compatibility class (in this case, A Platinum) to the list with all the A Platinum machines.

I can write the instructions which I mentioned. Basically I just ask users to specify how the machine can be upgraded in the description section, just like I have done with Vostro 3300.

So, what do you think?

How do you mean when you say that the computer can be upgraded? A hardware or software upgrade?

I thought I said it right at the beginning: "I was wondering if we could give more attention to computers on h-node which can be upgraded to a higher compatibility class by replacing one or more pieces of hardware." Did you follow the Dell Vostro 3300 link I made? It is an example of such a case when a computer can be upgraded to higher compatibility class by replacing a piece of hardware.

Sorry, now I've understood.. so, I think that that information could be written inside the description entry how you have done, this would be keep things simple.

What do you think?

I think we have a problem here: A user cannot easily find computers that can be upgraded to higher compatibility level. If a computer can be upgraded to A-Platinum, for example, it should be easy to find it from the database. We don't have too many A or even B level computers as it is , so why hide those which can be easily upgraded?

I know my suggestion requires extra work to implement, but I think it is very useful for users. A machine which can be upgraded to A-Platinum level is practically a A-Platinum machine, right? One just has to open it up and do a little work. I think it would be awesome if users could find such machines easily from h-node.

Ok, awesome! By the way, how close are you in releasing the next version of h-node? No pressure, just asking.

I'm a bit blocked because I have very little free time in this period, so I'm not sure I will be able to do the modifications I've planned to do by august and put it online.. indeed my last in SVN was done about 1 month ago.. sorry.. I think I will find more free time soon..

I think this adds needless complexity, and I am not completely clear on what you did. You bought extra hardware, not from the vendor. So the original vendor-provided hardware is still not compatible, it just isn't being used? If you had to source extra hardware, I don't think the vendor should be rewarded with a higher rating in the search results. A description in the text makes more sense to me.
