phone category?
submitted by tonicucoz, 03:38, 15 Décembre 2010
SUJET: new categories of hardware
STATUS: opened
PRIORITE: low
Description:

We would like to insert the phones category at h-node.com. At this stage only the Replicant (http://replicant.us/) operating system should be allowed for the testing since it is the only one completely free.

What do you think?

Perhaps a better category name could be chosen, for example: mobile-phones, mobile-computers, palmtop computers, ...

Please feel free to write here your opinion

This section is going to have to be more extensive. For example different phones have different proprietary libraries and firmwares that need to be replaced. For example the HTC dream needs these replaced ( Link) while the nexus one needs these replaced ( Link).

Thus we need a more detailed way of determining how well the device is supported (see this)

Things like this:

Level of support for each item (completely supported/partially supported/not supported)

Telephony

GPS

Wireless

Camera

Bluetooth

Root Access

SMS

The features you have indicated could be a good choice, other features could be indicated inside the description entry.

Perhaps the new category could be named "smartphones"

As far as the name goes I think something like "Smartphones (mobile computers)" might work because it clearly indicates that these while phones are still computers so they have a need for free software.

I also thought of another catagory. Also put maybe if internet access works. Since a lot of these phones have internet access via a browser.

2nd comment. I'm not too set on the name for the category. I mean it can always be changed right? That is if someone comes up with something better.

"The h-node project aims at the construction of a database of all the hardware that works with a fully free operating system."

What if there is no OS for this category yet? i think that this matter is alike but not the same as 3G, since it requires a Service Provider in order to accomplish its first purpose.

I think that there are many hidden things on this matter and much discussion to be done

Regards :)

Indeed I would like to involve more people in this discussion (perhaps someone involved in the Replicant project). Anyway, I think that smartphones have to be dealt like notebooks, that is they have to be tested with a fully free OS. It seems that Replicant comply with this requirement.

I'm not sure I've correctly understood your consideration.. smartphone have an OS that could potentially be fully free. Regarding internet access, this should be the same as notebooks with a 3G card, a computer (smartphone) plus a 3G card

Anyway you are right, we have to discuss in further detail. I've written to the replicant mailing list, I hope to involve more people in this discussion ;)

It would make more sense to have a Computer category like explained here: https://h-node.org/issues/view/en/297/1/8a737f9d18f8cf131922283571674bc5 Then we need to add Replicant in the list of OS. The rationale behind that is that it's not always easy to know what a smartphone is. Sometimes it's hard to know the difference between a smartphone and a tablet for instance. Replicant could also support Cameras like the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 in the future, and supporting music players that run Android or even smartwatches was considered in the past. All these are computers though.
