Suggesting 'Server' as new cattegory
submitted by lluvia, 12:07, 14 February 2012
Thema: add a vendor name
Stand: opened
Priorität: low
Beschreibung:
I now almost nothing about computers that have been designed to be servers, but I think they have a form-factor and characteristics that made them perfectly distinguisable from other computers, so maybe a new category for them should be fine: Some person could be looking for a server to buy (as I am currently), and a filter for this type could be fine.

do you think it would be a ok to insert a subtype to the notebooks category? It is currently: "notebooks, netbooks, tablet PC", it should become: ""notebooks, netbooks, tablet PC,servers". The subtype is one of the filters in the notebook catalogue page, so it would be easy to look for a server? What do you think?

Yes, something like that. I think it is reasonable.

We probably should rename the category to "computers" in this case, notebooks and servers being included in the same category is otherwise unobvious.

lammi87:

A server is a computer that is dedicated to do (usually) one job and one job only. A mail server or package repository in local network is a common example. Technically any computer can act as a server, but typically they are desktop PCs.

So, I think the server category would be a bit problematic and it might not be very practical.

Computers looks good. A D16 mainboard might be used as a server or desktop computer. See also this bug report for a similar approach for other computer types (ARM single board computers): https://h-node.org/issues/view/en/297/1/8a737f9d18f8cf131922283571674bc5
