Please be aware that this hardware is present on many computers that have a Management Engine. The Management Engine is a computer within your computer that is meant remove users the control of their computers through DRM, and other anti-features. In some cases the Management Engine even comes with remote control when AMT is present and/or used. In that case the Management Engine also controls the Ethernet card, and since it's transparent to the OS, the OS cannot do anything about that. All that is done with nonfree software that is running inside the Management Engine. When the computer is powered up, the Management Engine ROM code tries to load its operating system from a partition inside the memory chip that stores the BIOS or UEFI. On some computers, like the Thinkpads X200/X200s/X200t, T400/T400s, T500 it's possible to get rid of all the nonfree Management Engine operating system completely by replacing the nonfree BIOS / UEFI by Libreboot. To do that, Libreboot completely removes the Management Engine firmware and it also configures the partitions in a way that tells the Management Engine not to try to load its code.
